STANDARD TIBETAN

Interest in Tibet is currently increasing throughout the world. The key to understand Tibetan culture is the spoken and written language. Literary Tibetan is very different from the spoken language. Standard Tibetan is the most widely spoken form of the Tibetic languages. It is based on the speech of Lhasa, an Ü-Tsang (Central Tibetan) dialect. For this reason, Standard Tibetan is often called Lhasa Tibetan. Our teachers emphasize Modern colloquial Tibetan as spoken in the area, but adhering to a register that is widely used and understood. The student who masters it will have no difficulties in communicating in most communities where Tibetan is spoken.

The teachers also focus on Literary language, making it possible to make rapid progress in either Classical Tibetan or Modern Literary Tibetan. The teachers will use dialogues that incorporate a wide cultural background and so you will enter in the rich and endlessly fascinating sphere of Tibetan Civilization. Many Buddhist texts have survived only in Tibetan, therfore Tibetan language offers a route to Buddhism and an entry point to understand this religious philosophy. Tibetan Literature is very rich in this area. Lamas are the keepers of this tradition, still living in the Monasteries worldwide.
